Millions rely on cough syrups, but some ingredients pose serious risks. Codeine, a narcotic, can lead to addiction and death. Dextromethorphan, while safe in doses, is abused for hallucinogenic effects. Promethazine causes severe drowsiness and respiratory issues, especially in children. Diphenhydramine can trigger heart problems and seizures. Diethylene glycol, an industrial chemical, is highly toxic and can be fatal.
